WHAT IS IT?
This agent-based model simulates the dynamics of financial support networks within entrepreneurial ecosystems. Entrepreneurs form growth intentions based on attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, following the Theory of Planned Behavior. The model captures how network structure—particularly network density and the presence of venture-capital-backed peers—shapes access to venture capital and conditions the alignment between individual growth intentions and realized venture growth at the aggregate level.
HOW IT WORKS
Entrepreneurs compute their growth intention as a function of their individual attitude and their local social environment, including subjective norms (i.e., knowledge of entrepreneurs who have exhibited successful behavior by obtaining funding) and perceived behavioral control over access to financial capital (i.e., proximity to entrepreneurs connected to venture capitalists).
Based on their level of intention, entrepreneurs are classified as having low intention (B = 0, white agents) or high intention (yellow agents). Entrepreneurs with high intention attempt to access financial capital. If they have neighbors connected to a venture capitalist, they become acquainted with the venture capitalist, represented by the creation of a blue link.
After an evaluation period of approximately one month (10 ticks), the entrepreneur may obtain financial capital with a given probability. If funding is granted, the entrepreneur receives capital, changes color to green, and their behavior is set to B = 1 (successful). At the same time, a formal financial relationship with the venture capitalist is established, represented by a green link. If funding is not granted, the entrepreneur does not receive capital and returns to a low-intention state (B = 0).
When an entrepreneur obtains financial capital (B = 1), the financial relationship lasts for approximately 18 months (75 ticks). At the end of this period, the venture capitalist may provide an additional funding cycle with a given probability. If no further funding is provided, the financial relationship ends (the link changes from green to blue), and the entrepreneur’s behavior returns to B = 0.
HOW TO USE IT
The user must set the number of initially successful entrepreneurs (number-inter) and the level of connectivity among entrepreneurs in the network (connectivity).
